Perfume: sizes, testers, and batch codes

How we choose products: rows come from in-stock affiliate feeds that have a name, a price, and a photo when the shop sent one. We do not test the products, and a higher commission does not move a shop up the list.
Fragrance prices move with bottle size. A low price is often a smaller bottle or a tester without a cap.
Size is the product
Eau de parfum and eau de toilette are different strengths. 30 ml, 50 ml, and 100 ml are different prices per bottle and often a different price per millilitre. Compare the same strength and the same millilitres. A ‘gift set’ with a miniature is not the full bottle.
Testers are bottles used in shops. They can be legitimate leftovers and they can be incomplete. If you want a boxed retail bottle, the title must say so and the photo should show the box. Do not assume a low price includes the cap and the cellophane.
Where fakes show up
Well-known fragrance names are a common counterfeit category on wholesale marketplaces. A price far below every UK retailer, a title full of ‘5A’ or ‘replica’, or a shop you cannot identify is a reason to leave. The UK catalogue hides those patterns when they are visible. Grey imports from an unknown seller are not a comparison we want you to treat as a department store.
Authorised retailers and the brand’s own shop are the simple route. A comparison is useful when two of those list the same bottle. It is not useful when one row is a marketplace lot.
Batch codes and returns
Fragrance oxidises. A returns policy that excludes opened cosmetics is normal. Buy from a shop that will accept a damaged or wrong delivery unopened. We cannot check the batch code in the feed. You can ask the shop if the bottle is current stock.
Smell is not something this site tests. Sample sets, where a shop sells them, are the honest way to try a scent. We will not tell you a fragrance ‘smells like’ another one.
Using Visit retailer
When two UK shops list the same millilitre size, the page is a price comparison. Visit retailer is an affiliate link. The price you pay is the shop’s price, including any delivery they add for a small parcel. Ignore implausible was-price badges. They are not shown when the higher figure looks invented.
If the category is thin or the feed is down, you will not see a made-up ‘average UK bottle price’. Check a retailer you already trust.
Size is the product
Perfume is sold in small bottles that look similar in a photo and cost very different amounts because the millilitres differ. A 30 ml bottle and a 100 ml bottle are not a bargain comparison. Read the size in the title every time. A ‘travel’ spray, a sample vial, and a full bottle can share a photograph. If the title does not state millilitres, do not buy it from the feed alone. Open the retailer and confirm the box.
Eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and a body spray are different strengths and often different prices under the same fragrance name. Match the concentration as carefully as the brand. A gift set with a lotion is a different offer from the bottle alone. The lowest price in a mixed list is frequently the smallest or the weakest. Sort only after the titles agree.
Testers, fakes, and marketplace language
Tester bottles without a cap, ‘unboxed’, and decants are a different market. Some are legitimate retailer stock. Many listings in the wider web are not, and the wording is a warning: replica, inspired by, 1:1, and misspellings of a designer name. This site hides those patterns when they appear in the name or the shop. If a row still looks wrong — no size, no brand you can spell, a price that makes no sense next to two known shops — leave it.
Buy from a retailer you can contact in the UK. A batch code on the box is something the maker’s own guidance may help you read. We do not run an authenticity lab and we will not tell you a code ‘checks out’. Your protection is the shop’s returns policy and consumer rules on goods that are not as described. A marketplace seller with no real brand behind the title is a poor place to spend that effort.
Trying a scent without a fake review
Scent is personal. A guide cannot tell you that a perfume ‘smells like’ a place and be honest, because we have not sat a panel down and we will not invent quotes. Use a sample or a retailer that lets you return an unopened bottle. Once it is sprayed, many shops will refuse a change of mind. Read that line before you open the cellophane. If you already know the fragrance and you are only comparing size and shop, the category is enough.
Storage is simple and does not need a myth. Keep the bottle out of a hot bathroom windowsill if you can. Use it within a reasonable time once opened. If it arrives leaking, photograph it and use the retailer’s fault process. Do not decant it into a travel bottle and then expect a refund. The comparison’s job is to show live UK shops for the same size when the feed has them, and to send you there with Visit retailer.
Gifts and the receipt
A gift needs a retailer that will describe the returns window in a way the recipient can use, or a bottle you are sure of. A surprise that cannot be exchanged is how fragrance gifts go wrong. If the shop offers gift wrapping or a receipt that hides the price, that will be on the shop page, not in our feed. Check it there.
When you compare, prefer two or more known shops over a single extreme price. One shop can still be right. An extreme price with tester language is a reason to slow down. The perfume category on this site is the live list. If it has no rows, we will not invent a typical high-street price. Come back after the next feed, or open a retailer you already trust and then see whether the same size appears in the catalogue later.
Bottles that look the same in a photo
A cap, a box, and a cellophane wrap are part of what some people are buying as a gift. A tester without the cap can be a fair price and a poor gift. The title has to say which you are looking at. If the photo is only the juice in a generic bottle, do not assume a retail box is included. Confirm it on the shop page after Visit retailer, before you pay, and before you write a card message that promises a particular presentation.
Decants and unlabelled vials are outside what this comparison is for. If that is what the title describes, leave the row even if the price looks attractive next to a full bottle. You want the millilitres, the concentration, and a shop that will take the bottle back if the seal is already broken on arrival. Photograph the seal. Then the retailer’s process has something to look at. The category page is where you return if a second UK shop lists the same sealed size.
