Mattresses: firmness, size, and UK delivery

How we choose products: rows come from in-stock affiliate feeds that have a name, a price, and a photo when the shop sent one. We do not test the products, and a higher commission does not move a shop up the list.
A mattress is a bulky, personal purchase. The listing can show a price and a size. It cannot show whether you will sleep.
Size names in the UK
Single, small double, double, king, and super king are the names that matter, and the centimetre measurements differ by brand by a centimetre or two. Check the centimetres on the shop’s page, not only the word ‘double’. A bed frame you already own decides the size. Buying a different size because it is cheaper is how people end up with a mattress that overhangs or rattles in the frame.
Depth matters for sheets you already own. A thick pillow-top needs deep fitted sheets. If the listing does not give depth, treat the specification as incomplete and read the shop’s page before you rely on it.
Firmness is not a lab score here
Firm, medium, and soft are the maker’s words. Two ‘medium’ mattresses can feel different. We do not assign a firmness score and we do not claim to have slept on the range. If you need a specific feel, use the maker’s trial where one exists, and read who pays for the return collection. A cheap mattress with a paid collection can cost more than a slightly dearer one with a free collection.
Foam, hybrid, and open-spring are different constructions. Hybrids combine springs and foam and are heavier. Weight affects delivery and who can carry it upstairs. If you live in a flat with a tight stair, that is a real constraint the feed price ignores.
Delivery, removal, and trials
Mattress delivery in the UK is often a two-person crew or a boxed roll. The feed price may exclude the room-of-choice delivery and the removal of the old mattress. Those fees sit on the shop’s checkout. Compare them before you decide a headline price is lower.
A trial period is a shop policy, not a fact we can see in every feed row. If the listing does not state a trial, do not assume there is one. Open Visit retailer and read the returns page. Some trials start when the mattress is delivered, not when you open the box.
Comparing shops
Look for the same size and the same model name at more than one retailer. A single offer is not a market. Affiliate links do not change the mattress. They record that you came from this site. The shop still sets the price and the delivery.
Skip titles that are not English, wholesale lots, and anything that looks like a marketplace replica of a well-known bed brand. Bed-in-a-box brands are legitimate; a title that is only keywords and a too-low price is not a comparison. Discount badges appear only for plausible was-prices.
A practical sequence
Measure the frame. Choose the construction you are willing to move. Set a budget that includes delivery. Then compare live prices for that size. If the feed has no second shop, the page will not pretend there is one.
We cannot tell you which mattress will fix a bad back. That would be a medical claim this site does not make. Use the category to see current offers, and use the shop’s trial if you need to test the feel.
Measure the bed you already own
UK mattress names are easy to mix up. A double and a king are not a small step apart, and a European size in a title can look close to a UK size while being a different fit for the frame. Measure the frame, not the duvet. Write down length and width in centimetres before you open the category. If the product title does not state the size, do not assume the photo’s proportions. Depth matters too. A very deep mattress on an older frame can make the sheet a struggle and can change how a headboard feels.
The base under the mattress is part of the decision. Slatted bases have gaps the manufacturer usually specifies. A solid divan, an old sprung base, and a platform with a thin topper are different. If you are replacing only the mattress, check the new one is allowed on your base. That instruction lives on the retailer page more often than in the feed title. Visit retailer and read it. A mattress that sags because it was put on the wrong base will be an argument you do not want.
Feel is a trial, not a badge on this site
Firm, medium, and soft are marketing words until you lie on the mattress. We do not publish lab scores or ‘best mattress’ awards. A trial period, when the retailer offers one, is the practical substitute. Read how long it is, who collects the mattress if you refuse it, and whether the trial starts on delivery or on the day you open it. Those terms differ by shop. Two prices for the same named mattress can hide different delivery and collection terms.
Memory foam, pocket springs, hybrids, and a simple foam are different shapes of sleep. Foam can feel warmer to some people. Springs can feel easier to move on. Neither is a medical claim and this site will not make one. If you sleep hot, look for a cover you can remove and wash, and for a retailer that describes the cover in plain language. A trademarked fabric name with no explanation is not information.
Delivery into a UK home
Mattresses are bulky. Stairs, flats without a lift, and a tight turn on a landing are the real constraints. Some shops offer room-of-choice delivery and old-mattress removal. Some leave the rolled mattress at the door. The feed price usually does not include a note about stairs. Check the shop’s delivery line before you treat the lowest figure as the amount you will pay. A rolled mattress still needs space to expand, and the room will smell of new foam for a while. Plan that for a spare room if you can.
Disposal of the old mattress is often a separate charge or a council booking. If the retailer will take it, confirm that on their page. If they will not, do not leave it in a shared hallway. That is your problem to solve, and it is one more reason the headline price is not the whole job. Use the comparison to see whether more than one UK shop lists the same size and model. One shop alone is still a route to buy. It is not a comparison, and the product page should not pretend otherwise.
Care, stains, and the first month
Use a protector if you want an easier wash. Check the retailer’s trial rules first. Some trials are void if the mattress is stained. A protector is a cheap way to avoid that argument. Rotate or turn the mattress on the schedule the manual gives. Some foams are one-sided and must not be flipped. Follow the label, not a general tip from a different type of bed.
New mattresses can need days or weeks before they feel like the showroom, if you even tried one. Give it that time before you decide a trial has failed, unless something is obviously wrong: a broken spring, a torn cover on arrival, or a size that does not match what you ordered. Photograph the label and the delivery note. Then use the retailer’s process. FindAProduct does not take the mattress back. We sent you to the shop with an affiliate link, and the shop is who you pay.
