Garden furniture: materials and UK weather

How we choose products: rows come from in-stock affiliate feeds that have a name, a price, and a photo when the shop sent one. We do not test the products, and a higher commission does not move a shop up the list.
Garden furniture fails by rust, faded fabric, and a ‘set’ that is missing the chairs. The material and the contents line matter more than a style name.
Materials in a wet climate
Powder-coated steel is common and it rusts where the coating chips. Aluminium is lighter and does not rust the same way. Rattan-effect plastic over a frame can look like wicker and still be a steel frame underneath. Wood needs oil or it greys and splits. None of these is fancy. They are maintenance choices. If you will not cover or store the set, do not buy a fabric that the listing admits is shower-resistant only.
Cushions are the part that rots. A set that includes cushions you must bring inside is a different product from an all-weather sling. Check whether cushions are in the price. Many cheap rows are the frame only.
Sets, sizes, and the space you have
A ‘seven-piece’ set might be a table and six chairs, or a table, four chairs, and two stools. Count the seats you can use. Measure the patio, including room to pull a chair back. A large corner sofa that looks affordable may not fit through a side gate. The feed rarely knows your gate width. You do.
Parasols and covers are often separate. A comparison that ignores them will make a smaller set look dearer when it is actually complete. Read the contents list on the shop’s page after you click Visit retailer.
Delivery of bulky goods
Garden sets are heavy. The feed price often excludes delivery to a room or a garden, and it may be a kerbside drop. A kerbside drop of a 40 kg box is not a saving if you cannot lift it. Compare the delivery line, not only the product price.
Returns of bulky goods can cost more than the difference between two shops. Read the returns fee before you choose the lower headline. A known UK home retailer with a clear returns page is easier to deal with than a marketplace warehouse.
What the comparison is for
Use the category to find the same set, or the same material and seat count, at more than one shop. One offer is one shop’s file. Affiliate tracking does not change the furniture. Confirm colour names. ‘Grey’ and ‘charcoal’ are different dye lots and sometimes different products.
Skip wholesale lots, non-English titles, and replica designer outdoor branding. Those are not the UK high-street sets this guide is about. Discount badges are limited to plausible was-prices so a fake 80 percent off does not dress up a normal price.
Order of decisions
Measure the space and the access route. Choose a material you will maintain. Count the seats and whether cushions are included. Then compare live prices and delivery. If the feed is empty for this category, say so to yourself and check a retailer directly rather than trusting a made-up ‘typical set price’. We do not publish one.
This is not a weather test. We have not left sets outside for a winter and scored them. The advice is about what to read on the listing so the British weather is your problem only after you have chosen a material on purpose.
Measure the space in winter clothes
Garden furniture is bought from a photo of a large lawn and used on a patio that is smaller than it looked. Measure the slabs you have, then subtract room to pull a chair back and to walk past. A six-seat set that fills the whole patio is a storage problem the first time you need the path clear. Write the measurements down and ignore lifestyle photos. If the feed title has no width and depth, the retailer page must, or the listing is not ready to buy from a comparison.
UK weather is the other measurement. Furniture that stays out needs a material you will actually dry and cover. Rattan-effect sets often have a table with a glass or plastic top and cushions that must come inside. If you do not have a shed or a cupboard for the cushions, a wood or metal set you can wipe is the more honest buy. ‘All-weather’ on a tag is not a promise we can verify. Read what the retailer says about covers and rust.
Cushions, glass, and the box count
Sets are where comparisons go wrong. One shop sells the table and six chairs. Another sells the same table with four chairs and a parasol. A third sells the cushions separately. The lowest price is often the smallest box. Match the piece count in the title before you sort by price. On the product page, if two shops remain, read both names. If the titles still disagree, they are not one product and the page should not be used as a pure price sort.
Glass tops break. A replacement top is sometimes a special order and sometimes impossible after a season. Metal frames can be more repairable. Wooden tables need oil or they go grey and then soft. None of this is a reason to avoid a material. It is a reason to know which job you are taking on. If you want furniture you can leave and forget, say that out loud before you pick the set with the pale cushions in the photo.
Delivery of a set that does not fit through a terrace
Large boxes and UK terraces are a known clash. A sofa set may arrive in pieces, or it may arrive as a frame that still will not turn on a landing. Check whether delivery is to the door, to the garden, or to the kerb. Flats above a shop and houses with no side access need that answer before you pay. The comparison feed will not have your gate width. Visit retailer and read the delivery notes. If they are missing, ask the shop, or pick a retailer whose page is clearer.
Old furniture you are replacing is your disposal job unless the shop says otherwise. Do not assume a take-back. Council bulky waste, a recycling centre, and a retailer service are different. A very low price that later grows a delivery surcharge is still the shop’s checkout, and you will see it there. Come back to the comparison if the surcharge makes a second shop cheaper. That is the point of having more than one live offer.
Parasols, covers, and storage through winter
A parasol base is heavy and it is often not in the set. A cheap parasol with no base will blow across a patio. If the title is silent, look at the product photo for a base and then confirm on the shop page. Covers help if you use them. A cover that pools water is worse than no cover. Look for a shape that sheds rain, and for a place to store dry cushions. If you have neither, choose furniture that can sit uncovered without falling apart in one winter.
At the end of the season, wipe metal, bring cushions in, and check fixings. A loose bolt in October is a wobble in May. This is ordinary care, not a test result. Use the garden furniture category to find sets with a real photo and preferably more than one UK shop. Leave titles that look like a different language, a replica of a designer outdoor brand, or a sample row. Those are filtered from the public catalogue when we can see the pattern, and they are not bargains.
